The New York Commandery holds an annual meeting each May where we hold a dinner in Manhattan for the election of officers, reading and filing of reports. We also usually have a speaker at this dinner on a subject pertaining to Civil War history.
Each Spring the New York Commandery presents two ROTC awards to students in local University ROTC programs the Tri-State area. The award consists of a monetary scholarship and MOLLUS ROTC medal with ribbon and certificate to deserving students who meet the established criteria.
We also hold monthly officer meetings in the ‘season’ September – June at the Squadron A Club in Midtown Manhattan, where we conduct business on an as needed basis.
These meetings are open and members are welcome to attend.
There are currently four categories of membership within the Military Order of the Loyal Legion of the United States:
Hereditary, Junior, Associate and Honorary.
Hereditary - Direct male descendants of the age of 18 years or more of a commissioned officer in the U.S. Army, Navy or Marines who served during the War of the Rebellion, or male descendants of a brother or sister of any such officer.
Junior - Direct male descendants under age 18 years of an eligible officer or of a brother or sister of any such eligible officer. Junior Companions cannot vote or hold office.
Associate - Male persons of the age 18 years or more who are not known to be eligible for Hereditary membership and who subscribe to the Preamble, Principles and Objects of the Order and who have demonstrated a serious interest in the War of the Rebellion, and whose membership will advance the objects of the Order. Associates may vote and serve on committees, but may not hold office. Not all Commanderies provide for this particular membership category.
Please Note: Associate (Non-hereditary) membership is available in many (but not necessarily all) of the Commanderies. Associate affiliation is based on a percentage of the number of hereditary members in each Commandery. Consequently, movement to elect Associates may be delayed until such time as there are enough hereditary Companions present in the particular Commandery. Individual Commanderies may or may not maintained a list of Associate applicants that have been referred by the Commandery-in-Chief.
Honorary - Bestowed by the Commandery-in-Chief and Commanderies under the provisions of the Constitution and By-Laws.
Applications fees and annual dues vary among MOLLUS Commanderies.
